The nurse practitioner provides diagnosis, consultation, and follow-up under the supervision of one or more physicians in the person’s area of practice. The nurse practitioner provides age and specialty appropriate medical care at the level of training achieved. The scope of responsibility includes clinical practice, education, consultation, research, and program coordination. This person is also accountable to and reports administratively to the supervising physician. A nurse practitioner can be responsible for various shifts and may be subject to work over 40 hours per week and callback hours may also be required. The nurse practitioner (ARNP) identifies, evaluates, and addresses disease prevention and health promotion issues of the population in practice while administering quality patient care. This person also demonstrates satisfactory knowledge and clinical judgment to provide appropriate care for patients. The ARNP performs general physical examination as indicated and instructs patients in health promotion and disease prevention. This person will examine patients to determine presence of illness, utilizing physical findings, laboratory results, medical history, ascertains nature and extent of illness and prescribes treatments as indicated. The nurse practitioner documents and maintains patient records of services provided according to agency and JCAHO standards. This person may also develop and institute appropriate treatment plans per protocol with the consultation of a medical director. In addition, treatment will include the care of acute and chronic problems as well as contraceptive services. The ARNP assists with various patient counseling and education functions, participates in the development of protocols, establishes a collaborative relationship with other medical providers, and may participates in continuing education courses, in-services and staff meetings. In addition, the nurse practitioner is responsible for other related job duties assigned by the medical director and works in an independent or interdependent relationship with members of the medical staff which allows for consultation, collaboration, or referral. This person also is responsible of the diagnosis and treatment of acute, chronic, and long-term health issues. The ARNP educates patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues, and the use of prescribed medical treatments. It is also important for this person to maintain legible, accurate, and confidential medical records, documents all medical evaluations, diagnoses, procedures, treatment, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations compliant with the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Other job duties and responsibilities for a nurse practitioner may include:
- Facilitating evaluation of records by physician(s), peers, and quality/standards according to protocols and receives and implements constructive directives.
- Analyzes new knowledge gained from conferences, workshops, professional literature, or “hands-on training” and assimilates this knowledge into clinical practice.
- Assists with patient care management; provides follow-up care to patients and updates physicians and surgeons of a patient’s status.
- Keeps informed of inpatients’ progress by attending daily rounds and documents progress in medical record charts with interaction of home health agencies.
- Completes patients’ comprehensive health history summary and physical examinations; responsible or clinical resumes for discharged patients.
- Assists with pre-operative care for patients.
Nurse Practitioner Education and Qualifications
- Masters degree (MS) in nursing, state RN license, and certifications as an ARNP is required
